2021 2K Team Racing Australian Championship Cancelled

The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania has cancelled the 2021 2K Team Racing Australian Championship which was scheduled to be run on the River Derwent this coming weekend (Feb 20-21).

“Covid-19 travel restrictions have made it unrealistic to conduct this year’s event given that there were three teams from Victoria entered,” said Vice-Commodore Ross Mannering.

“In addition, at least one of the Tasmanian teams included some Melbourne-based members who, under current restrictions, would have had to quarantine for 14 days on arrival, ruling them out of racing at the weekend,” V-C Mannering said.

2K Team Racing is an exciting form of sailing which has caught the imagination of sailors across the world, but particularly in Europe where a strong circuit had developed prior to the impact of Covid-19.

This year’s event would have been sailed in Elliot 6 keel boats, each with a crew of 3-4 people.  Each team comprises two boats who sail short, umpired races against another team of two boats.  Racing is fast and action-packed with competitors using their speed, boat-handling skills and rules knowledge to ensure an opposition boat finishes in last place.

The club is looking to find a suitable date later in the year to hold the event when travel restrictions allow.
